I am Eric Siversen, the Founder of Flushie which was created in 2015. I had an e-commerce business with an office full of people and our bathroom was close to the front door. So we would have situations of visitors, or guests coming into the office and having to experience embarrassing odors as soon as they walked in.
We had to do something about it, and that is how Flushie was born. It took about a year of R&D to finally master the formula to truly block the odors and left the area with a fresh and pleasant smell instead of the horrors that once covered the entrance to our office. I knew then that this was a product everyone could use, and had to figure out the right way to get it to market. It started with a tradeshow booth and the International Housewares Show in Chicago, and I was able to lock a spot into the “Inventors Corner” which was the busiest lane of the show.
Everyone wants to see the newest and hottest items to hit the market so I was able to land a lot of eyes on the product. I handmade several thousand little bottle samples to give out to everyone walking by to try in their hotel rooms, or take it home with them. My pitch was that my product saved marriages and relationships, and helped co-workers share bathrooms in peace.
This type of product has a funny side to it with a lot of puns, and related situations that all people who go to the bathroom can relate to. While some of my competitors focus on novelty gifts for their toilet sprays, Flushie has been marketed as being a necessary household item for every bathroom. We want this to be just as important as toilet paper, and to be used daily by our customers.
Several years ago nobody knew that a poop spray existed, and what its purpose was. Customers were only familiar with the typical aerosol sprays that would smell horrible in a bathroom as it is like a mix of flowers and waste. Selling our product took some time as the customers started to learn about Pre-toilet sprays as an option to hide embarrassing odors in the stalls at work, or even at home. Fast forward a few more years, and the learning curve is getting easier as people are more aware of this type of product as a solution.
There are still many people I speak with that have never experienced using this type of product, so I know that the market still has a way to go. During Covid, we faced our toughest year and supply chain issues with our bottles as our suppliers were low on stock, and hand sanitizer companies were popping up left and right and buying up the bottles we used regularly for our products. However, we continue to push through and have overcome most of those hurdles, and are focused on continuing to grow the brand.
This business like many others I have started has faced multiple challenges and giving up is never an option for me. As an entrepreneur you have to be ready to shift and adapt as needed, to continue on a path forward to create success. It is never a straight line. Amazon has been a giant catalyst in our success, and we have been able to attract thousands of new customers to our brand through that channel alone.
To be successful in any brand you have to first believe in yourself, and the products you are bringing to market. Especially with a product like Flushie, it has to be an item that customers will want to continually fill their bathrooms with on a regular basis as they run out. We have helped groups of people suffering from IBS, and other ailments that leave people in uncomfortable situations when they have to use bathrooms at inconvenient times.
